Cold Room Design and Installation in Kenya

End-to-end cold room projects, from design and equipment selection to installation, commissioning and maintenance.

Finstar Industrial Systems designs, supplies and installs cold rooms for food processing, cold storage, hospitality, pharmaceutical storage, supermarkets, warehouses and post-harvest handling. A project covers the insulated enclosure, the refrigeration plant that holds it at temperature, and the doors, curtains, lighting and controls that make it usable day to day.

Because the same team also stocks cold room hardware and refrigeration parts — PU insulation foam, cold room doors and locks, PVC strip curtains, compressors, evaporators, temperature controllers and refrigerants — a cold room can be quoted, built and later maintained by one contractor in Nairobi rather than assembled from several suppliers.

What the work covers

  • Design and layout of the cold room around the product, load and site
  • The insulated enclosure, PU insulation, doors, locks and strip curtains
  • Refrigeration plant, evaporators and pipework, supplied and installed
  • PVC strip curtain and insulation installation
  • Commissioning, and planned maintenance after handover

Typical sites

  • Food and beverage processing
  • Cold storage and warehousing
  • Hotels, restaurants and hospitality kitchens
  • Pharmaceutical and healthcare storage
  • Supermarkets and retail
  • Agriculture, floriculture and post-harvest cooling

Before you ask for a quote

The points that most often change the size, cost and running cost of a cold room design & installation project. Thinking them through first makes the quotation faster and more accurate.

Storage temperature

A chiller (typically around 0 to +8 °C) and a freezer room (typically −18 °C or colder) need different insulation thickness, refrigeration capacity and door heaters. Decide which you need — or whether you need both, side by side — before sizing anything else.

Product load and daily throughput

The refrigeration load depends far more on how much warm product goes in each day, and how quickly it must be pulled down, than on the room's volume. Daily intake, entry temperature and target pull-down time drive the plant size.

Doors and traffic

Every door opening lets warm, humid air in. Frequent forklift or trolley traffic calls for wider doors, strip curtains and sometimes an ante-room; a hinged door is fine for occasional access.

Plant location and power

The condensing unit needs a well-ventilated position with service access. Where the supply voltage fluctuates, allow for voltage protection — compressor failures from supply problems are a common and avoidable cost.

What to send with your enquiry

Drawings, a BOQ, equipment schedules, model numbers or photographs of existing equipment are all useful. If you only have some of this, send what you have.

  • Internal dimensions (or the space available) and whether the room is indoors or outdoors
  • What will be stored, the target temperature, and how much product goes in per day
  • Number and size of doors, and how often they are used
  • Site location and the power supply available (single or three phase)
  • Any drawings, BOQ or existing equipment details

FAQ

Cold Room Design & Installation: common questions

Answers to questions engineers, facility managers and procurement teams ask before starting a project.

Does Finstar install cold rooms, or only supply the parts?
Both. Finstar Industrial Systems supplies cold room components and also designs and installs complete cold rooms, including the refrigeration plant, with commissioning and maintenance after handover.
What information do you need to quote a cold room?
The room size, what will be stored and at what temperature, the daily product intake, door sizes and usage, the site location and power supply. Drawings or a BOQ help if you have them; a site visit may be needed for larger projects.
Can you work on a cold room project outside Nairobi?
Yes. Finstar is based in Industrial Area, Nairobi and supports projects across Kenya and the wider East African region, depending on scope.
